School Supply Train

The Junior League of Longview partnered with First Baptist Church of Longview and Buckner Children and Family Services for our annual School Supply Train. Over 3200backpacks filled with supplies are provided to qualified children. The project allows the children to start the school year with age appropriate supplies, higher self-esteem and positive attitude. In addition to school supplies, several services are offered free of charge including haircuts, eye examinations, dental screenings, and immunizations. League volunteers purchase, inventory, fill backpacks and distribute them to children through a one-day event held at the ROC at First Baptist Church.

Kids in the Kitchen

The goal of the Junior League’s Kids in the Kitchen initiative, which is supported internationally by over 200 Junior Leagues, is to empower youth to make healthy lifestyle choices and help reverse the growth of childhood obesity and its associated health issues such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol.  This year the Kids in the Kitchen committee is working with local schools in developing a garden and learning about nutrition.  We applied and won one of the KIK grants given by Kashi to AJLI Leagues.

Done-In-A-Day is a series of concentrated projects that provide assistance to non-profit agencies by offering volunteers for community-based events on a short-term basis.  Our League Members assist local organizations and service agencies through hands-on volunteer work.  All projects selected meet a community need and relate to the Junior League’s mission.  The League enjoys partnering with local agencies and our members enjoy the variety the projects provide.

Past Done in a Day Projects: Coats for Kids, Habitat for Humanity, The Humane Society, Women’s Shelter at Hiway 80 Rescue, The Salvation Army, Newgate Mission. Haverty’s Angel Tree, Heartway’s Hospice

Helping Hands

Helping Hands is the Junior League of Longview’s newest project, and, as it title suggest, lends helping hands to poverty related organizations around our community on a monthly basis.  They serve meals and volunteereed at organizations such as Newgate Ministries, HiWay 80 Rescue Mission, Hope Haven, Meals on Wheels and other outreach programs.  In addition to serving, League members create fun ways to play with the children and brighten the day of those they serve through games and activities.  Our volunteers really enjoyed this project, serving meals to as many as 150 people at a time.
